The "Snakes on a Plane" Effect

Sethual Chocolate hipped me to this review of X3 which contains this interesting tidbit:

In one scene, the unstoppable Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones) bashes through wall after wall, until a naive Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) slows him down by sinking him into the floor. The angry mutant declares, "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!" and then continues on his quest, but the brief line sticks out glaringly in an otherwise vulgarity-free film. "When that line comes up, I'm probably going to start breakdancing, and Randy will scream out the phrase himself," 21-year-old college student Xavier Nazario said excitedly, thrilled over the prospect of watching Jones utter the line made popular by an Internet spoof Nazario released last February. Using an old "X-Men" cartoon, Nazario and pal Randy Hayes dubbed their voices in, giving birth to the now-famous catchphrase. Hayes, who voiced Juggernaut's ghetto persona in the top-rated YouTube.com clip, isn't quite so shocked that Ratner paid tribute to the clip. "Everybody loves the Juggernaut," he laughed.

See Juggernaut say it in X3.

See the Navaro/Hayes animated short that popularized the line.

The word "juggernaut" looks very strange if you type it over and over, as I've done in talking to Sethual and in this article.

This line being inserted into X3 is a clear example of the ever-growing "Snakes on a Plane Effect". Internet fans latch onto something funny or cool or meme-worthy and it becomes so popular that it makes it into a major motion picture or TV station. I'm calling it the "Snakes on a Plane Effect" because of the internet insanity surrounding SOAP, which was originally going to be no better than a B-level horror film but is now being considered a possible successor to Rocky Horror in terms of cult classic status. And a good portion of it comes from this simple little comic (NSFW text). Amazing.

One of the very first instances? Buffy the Vampire Slayer references Trogdor the Burninator.

Just... let's not overuse this. We wouldn't want stupid memes (like "Todd Heap's Balls") making it into movies.

Josh Cohen of Multiple Mentality isn't the Juggernaut, bitch.

I think the term "<a href="... (Below threshold)

I think the term "fan service" does a good job of describing the Juggernaut line.

Strangely, that term (ITJ, ... (Below threshold)
wah:

Strangely, that term (ITJ, B) doesn't make it to the wikipedia entry...but does explain why they made that one a registration required article.

Actually, it's funny, the W... (Below threshold)

Actually, it's funny, the Wikipedia entry is semi-protected because there's a crank in Britain who wants the page to contain a reference to the supermarket chain Tesco. There have been attempts to create a Juggernaut Bitch article, though.

Anyway, that clip doesn't have him saying "bitch", so maybe it isn't a full reference after all?
